Comics & Graphic Novels
I have always found enjoyment in reading comic books. This pleasure first started when I was a kid and read The Funnies in the newspaper, alongside my grandfather reading the news, sports, and obituaries. Comics have a way of transmitting story in a fascinating way. Of course, the author writes the characters' dialogue much the same as a traditional text, but comics have images which transmit a story in an appealing, beautiful, and descriptive way. Kids and adults alike can enjoy comics and the stories that they provide.
Graphic novels are essentially comic books, but have longer stories-- these enable the author to work on character development more and to able tell a longer story. My favourite graphic novel is called "Bone", which is a series of 9 books, telling the tale of three cousins wandering into a magical, dangerous, vivid world. Jeff Smith, the author and illustrator of this series, did an incredible job delivering round, interesting characters to his readers and painted their world exquisitely.
Visual literature is great for kids because it appeals to our love for visual stimulation. It's fun to see the characters acting out the story, unlike reading an author's description of going's on in a traditional novel.
